Privacy Policy

Account Information

When you sign in with Apple, we receive your Apple ID email address (or a private relay address) and a unique user identifier. This is used to create and manage your account.

Camera and Photos

When you scan a meal, Waaala captures photos using your device camera. Photos are processed to estimate nutritional content and are stored locally on your device. If you are signed in, photos and meal data may also be synced to our cloud service.

Voice Input

With your permission, Waaala uses your device microphone and Apple's Speech Recognition to let you describe food by voice. Audio is processed on-device by Apple's Speech framework and is not stored or transmitted by Waaala. Only the resulting text transcription is used.

Location

With your permission, Waaala collects your approximate location when you scan a meal. This is used to identify nearby restaurants and to show where you ate on your meal history map.

Health and Nutrition Data

Waaala stores your nutritional goals (calorie target, macronutrient goals), body metrics (age, height, weight, sex, activity level), and meal history.

Notification Preferences

If you enable reminders, Waaala stores your meal reminder preferences locally on your device.

Purchase Information

Your subscription status is verified through Apple's StoreKit. We do not collect or store payment details.

Meal Analysis

When you scan a meal, your photo is sent to Anthropic's Claude AI service for nutritional analysis. If location is available, your approximate coordinates and the name of a nearby restaurant may be included to improve accuracy. Anthropic processes this data according to their privacy policy and API terms.

Insights and Coaching

Your meal history and nutritional goals are used to generate personalized insights and coaching tips via Anthropic's AI service. Only aggregated summary data (calorie totals, macro breakdowns, meal descriptions) is sent for this purpose, not your photos.

Cloud Sync

If you sign in with Apple, your meal data (photos, nutritional information, and metadata) is synced to our cloud service powered by Supabase. This enables you to back up and restore your data. Cloud sync is only active when you are signed in.

Local Storage

Your meals, goals, body metrics, ingredient corrections, and preferences are also stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData and UserDefaults frameworks.

Anthropic (Claude AI)

Meal photos and associated context (location, restaurant name, ingredient corrections) are transmitted to Anthropic's API for nutritional analysis. Anthropic processes API requests according to their usage policy. We recommend reviewing Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com/privacy.

Supabase

If you sign in, your account information, meal data, and meal photos are stored on Supabase's cloud infrastructure. Supabase acts as our backend service provider. Data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections and stored securely. Review Supabase's privacy policy at supabase.com/privacy.

Apple Services

We use Apple MapKit to identify nearby restaurants (subject to Apple's privacy policy), Apple StoreKit for subscription management (payment information is handled entirely by Apple), and Apple Speech Recognition for voice input (processed on-device).

Personal data is stored both locally on your device and, if you are signed in, on our cloud service (Supabase). All data transmitted between your device, Anthropic, and Supabase is encrypted using HTTPS. Your Supabase account is secured with Apple's authentication tokens.

Local Data

Your meal history, photos, and preferences remain on your device until you delete them within the app or delete the app itself.

Cloud Data

If you are signed in, synced data is retained on our cloud service until you delete it from the app or delete your account. Deleting the app does not automatically remove cloud data.

Third-Party Processing

Data sent to Anthropic for analysis is subject to Anthropic's data retention policies.

You can delete individual meals and their associated photos at any time within the app. You can revoke camera, location, microphone, and speech recognition permissions at any time in your device Settings. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data. You can manage or cancel your subscription through your Apple ID settings. You can sign out to stop cloud syncing at any time.

Waaala is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
